Fall Wheel Ride in Kenosha County October 2

Enjoy the fall colors just across the Wisconsin border at the “Fall Wheel Ride” in Kenosha County. Sponsored by Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser and Kenosha County Parks, three distances are available for bike riders of all abilities.

All routes converge at Petrifying Springs Park, Pavilion 1, where snacks (including hot apple cider!), safety checks and tips, and bike-related activities and education will be provided from 10am until Noon.

Pilates for Pink at Harmony Mind Body Fitness supports Breast Cancer Research

Lincoln Park’s Harmony Mind Body Fitness is teaming up with Shape Magazine and hundreds of Pilates studios around the country this October to raise money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation as part of Shape’s Pilates for Pink 2010 program.

Now in it’s fifth year, Pilates for Pink has raised over $700,000 to date.

Learn to “Stay Fit While You Sit” on September 30

It’s challenging to stay fit in the workplace. While some companies have fitness centers on-site or provide discounted rates at local fitness centers, the majority of the workforce spends far too many hours glued to a computer screen, standing on a concrete floor all day, or doing repetitive motions on some machine.

Clear out your athletic shoes with AthletiCo’s shoe drive for Share Your Soles

Chicagoland AthletiCo locations will be holding a shoe drive in October to collect new and gently used shoes for Share Your Soles. Share Your Soles, a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Alsip, provides shoes to impoverished people in the United States and throughout the world.

In it’s fifth year, the AthletiCo shoe drive will take place in the days around the Chicago Marathon (on 10-10-10). From Monday, October 4 through Saturday, October 16, each AthletiCo facility will have a designated donation bin to collect shoes. AthletiCo locations are available on their web site.

Risky Additions to a Low-Carb Diet

Atkins-style low-carbohydrate diets help people lose weight, but people who simply replace the bread and pasta with calories from animal protein and animal fat may face an increased risk of early death from cancer and heart disease, a new study reports.

…   But death rates varied, depending on the sources of protein and fat used to displace carbohydrates. Low-carb eaters who drew more protein and fat from vegetable sources like beans and nuts were 20 percent less likely to die over the period than people who ate a high-carbohydrate diet.

But low-carb dieters who got most of their protein and fat from animal sources like red and processed meats were 14 percent more likely to die of heart disease and 28 percent more likely to die of cancer, the analysis found.    Read More…
